Description
Pre-Columbian, Chancay culture, central coast of Peru, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. A finely painted polychrome pottery round-bodied canteen with a wide-mouthed spout branching off a narrow bulging neck (to prevent evaporation), and twin curved strap handles on either side of the neck. Each side is painted with a black and tan transforming shaman/jaguar with a spotted coat that stands with arms and hands raised and a bifurcated streamer attached to the top of its head and sweeping down both sides. The dotted pattern on the shoulders beautifully mirrors the jaguar coat. Size: 5.625" W x 7.5" H (14.3 cm x 19 cm)
The jaguar symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. A nocturnal animal, the jaguar sleeps in caves and dark places and creeps quietly in the forest, evoking great mystery.
Provenance: Ex-private collection of Charles and Rita Colbert acquired in the 1960's
