Description
mid 19th century, approximate three gallon capacity, olive brown alkaline glazed stoneware of an ovoid form, having a high collar with inner ledge, applied lug handles, stamped above one handle with four circular impressed marks each with an inner raised "X" (these stamps may have represented capacity).

A similar jar from the Charleston Museum is shown in Cinda K. Baldwin's Great and Noble Jar: Traditional Stoneware of South Carolina (Athens: The University of Georgia Press,1993), page 45, plate 2.16.
The Landrum stoneware and brick factory was located at Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC.

Condition
Overall very good estate condition considering age and use; collar with .5 in. rim chip; some glaze irregularities and shallow chips to the handles; base roughness; some interior glaze erosion. Examined with black light.
