Description
Double handled alkaline glazed stoneware storage jar from the Edgefield District in South Carolina, ca. 1850-1880. With strap handles.

Condition
The item has heavy wear throughout, as shown in the listing image. No major chips along the rim. There is minor chipping and cracks, as expected with age, throughout the item. There are several areas of original firing flaws and loss to glaze across the exterior, most noticeably by the handles and towards the underside. There is crazing throughout the exterior. There are 4 losses to the lower half of the exterior, the biggest measuring 1 inch. The is a network of white accretions along the exterior, center of the body. Along the exterior, there are areas of unevenness, original to the item. The handles are firmly attached to the neck and body. Dust has collected where the handles attach to the neck, which can be easily cleaned. There is white accretion along the interior of the neck. One of the handles has loss to glaze, where it joins to the rim. The rim has loss to glaze along the exterior and interior. Along the interior, there are several areas of glazing loss, which does not affect the exterior. No visible signs of restoration under UV light.
