Description
Early Cochiti Pottery Storage Jar
ca 1850

large, ovoid form painted with sharp, angular designs; pitch repair towards base

height 16-1/4 inches x diameter 1-3/4 inches

Included is a letter of identification from the late Francis Harlow, renowned authority on the evolution of Puebloan ceramic styles:

8 May 1979

The attached photograph, stamped with my seal, illustrates a fine Cochiti Pueblo Storage jar, about 40 cm tall, probably made about 1860 A.D.

This typical example demonstrates a rather unusual mend, accompanied with a pitch-lined material, probably by the Indians themselves shortly after the vessel was fired.   The exterior slip extends over the rim top and approximately 5 cm down inside.   There is no red or black pigment on the rim top, so far as I could see when I examined the jar on 7 June 1978.
