Item Details
Description
Japan, Edo period, Genroku era, dated March 1702 CE. A larger section of a Japanese tombstone incised with three columns of characters, the rightmost translates to Genroku 15 - Genroku being the name of an era that dates from approximately 1688 to 1704 CE; Genroku 15 is 1702 CE. The center inscription translates to "Mysyunsin" - most likely a posthumous name. The name is probably longer; however, only three characters have survived. On the left is "Sangatu" meaning March. A rare example of funerary material culture from Japan. Size: 7.5" W x 9.5" H (19 cm x 24.1 cm)
