Item Details

Description

Southeast Asia, Burma, Ava Period, ca. 18th to 19th centuries CE. This is a gilded bronze statue of a Buddha figure seated before an altar; it appears to have been made as a component of something else, like a finial atop a wooden staff or some other perishable object. The Buddha sits with a throne behind him that has what looks like an animal head design and a flattened flame. This piece was made during the Ava period, a time of transition and upheaval in Burmese history, when ties with India - previously very strong - began to fall away because of the ongoing warfare and lack of centralized power. As a result, Buddha images changed from being influenced by the subcontinent to having their own Burmese style. Size: 2.7" L x 2.15" W x 4.5" H (6.9 cm x 5.5 cm x 11.4 cm)
