Ancient Scythian Ornamental Gold Attachment
Ancient Scythian Ornamental Gold Attachment
Item Details
Description
Western Asia, Scythian culture, ca. 1st millennium BCE. This is a hammered ornamental gold applique sheeting, perhaps from a garment or scabbard, with small attachment holes. There is significant blackening to the surface suggesting fire damage. This was part of an important Maotic-Scythian hoard, purportedly found near the Black Sea. The Scythians are famous for their goldwork, and rightly so; hoards of their treasures have been found throughout eastern and central Europe and western and central Asia. These hoards may represent gifts that were made to foreign rulers, votive offerings, or treasures buried and forgotten. Size: 7" L x 1.25" W (17.8 cm x 3.2 cm), 17 g

Provenance: Ex-Taisei Gallery Collection auction, Nov. 1992, NYC. Lot #167.
