Ancient Scythian Gold Rabbit Appliques (pr)
Item Details
Description
Western Asia, ca. 2nd century BCE. This is a pair of gold appliques with a repousse depiction of what appears to be a seated rabbit. The figures have pronounced eyes and ears. This is from a Maotic-Scythian hoard, said to have been found near the Black Sea. The ancient Scythians left behind a tremendous body of beautiful, delicate gold artwork, nearly all of it found from tombs called kurgans that dot the landscape from the Black Sea to Mongolia. Gold pieces like this probably came from workshops located on the north of the Black Sea, in modern day Ukraine and Russia. These have an interesting, abstract quality that calls to mind modern Expressionism. Size: 1.75" L x 0.75" W (4.4 cm x 1.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Taisei Gallery Collection auction, Nov. 1992, NYC. Lot #167, part lot.
