Rare World War I patch, 3.5 x 4.5 in., for a member of the U.S. Naval Academy. This impressive patch is of blue felt construction with a stiff backing and displays a well-detailed and attractive gold bullion embroidery, depicting the coat of arms of the academy. The imagery consists of a hand grasping a trident, a shield bearing an ancient galley ship coming into action, an open book (representing education), and a banner with the Latin motto ‘Ex scientia tridens’ (‘Through Knowledge, Sea Power’). Protruding on the reverse are three stickpins for attachment to a blazer. General wear has slightly diminished the original brilliance of the gold bullion. A fine example, nicely presented in a 5.25 x 6.25 in. riker mount.
