Description
Near East, from area that is modern-day Ukraine, Southern European Russia, and Crimea, ca. 5th century BCE. Comprised of three independent high karat gold elements; a central magnificent element has granular ball designs and five garnet or carnelian embedments. On either side are two adorning elements of strap termini shaped as pointed straps. Five very fine sections, the central rectangular element decorated with tiny granular balls and five garnet or sapphire jewels. Size: All elements mounted measures approximately 4" across (10cm) x 1/2"H+ custom bronze base.
Provenance: This is from an important Maotic-Scythian hoard, purportedly found near the Black Sea; ex-Taisei Gallery Collection auction, Nov. 1992, NYC. Lot #167.
