Description
HISTORICAL: Henry Campbell-Bannerman (1836-1908) British Prime Minister 1905-08. A.L.S., with his initials HCB (twice), one page, 8vo, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 21st December n.y., to Lord Elgin, on the blind embossed stationery of the First Lord of the Treasury. Campbell-Bannerman asks 'Would it not be well where I have marked A to put in some words such as “while reserving their opinion & freedom of action in the whole matter”' and continues 'As it stands it seems to imply that provided importation is stopped we are content: I do not think this wd. represent the view of the Cabinet….' and in a postscript also remarks 'It would be well to take the opinion of the Lord Ch. & Ch. Of Exchequer', accompanied by Elgin's original A.L.S. to Campbell-Bannerman, stating that he feels 'something official should be published' and another related holograph statement, unsigned, concerning the Prime Minister's statement on Chinese labour; Frederick Roberts (1832-1914) British Field Marshal, Victoria Cross winner for his actions during the Indian Mutiny at Khudaganj on 2nd January 1858. A.L.S., Roberts, one page, 8vo, Portland Place, 18th December 1902, to [Bernard] Holland. Roberts states, in full, 'I am very much obliged. The alterations you have made in the enclosed (no longer present) are just what I want'. With blank integral leaf. Together with a small selection of other A.Ls.S. and one T.L.S. etc., by various other political figures etc., including John Morley, Viscount Milner (discussing the merits of various individuals for Colonial appointments), Alfred Lyttelton (A.L.S. with his initials A.L., announcing the tragic death of his child at 1½ years of age), Francis Knollys (writing on behalf of Queen Alexandra and remarking that she is 'glad to find that Captain Bertrand's allegations are largely incorrect'), Alfred Marshall, Horace Plunkett (with references to Ireland) etc. Generally VG, 14
