BUFFALO POTTERY BLUE WILLOW CERAMIC TABLE ARTICLES, LOT OF 54, comprising eight 6 1/4" D plates; eight 7" D plates; nine 4 7/8" D dishes; eight 8 3/8" D plates; eight 9 3/8" D plates; eight 10 1/4" D plates; three serving bowls from 8 5/8"D to 9 3/8" D; one 10 5/8" x 8 5/8" platter, and one 14 1/4" x 11 3/16" platter; all having a blue chinoiserie transfer design in the "Blue Willow" pattern. All marked "SEMI-VITREOUS / BUFFALO POTTERY" with date marks ranging from 1908-1916. Buffalo, New York. 1908-1918.
46 pieces undamaged, minute flake on underside of rims on two 6 1/4" D plate, hairlines on rim of two 7" D plates, chip on foot rim of one 8 3/8" D plate, chip on foot rim of two 9 3/8" D plates. Manufacturing hairline on foot rim of one 6 1/4" D plate, filled in with glaze. Expected glaze crazing and some staining.
Provenance: From the collection of the late Phillip M. Sullivan.
Catalogue Note: The "Blue Willow" pattern is said to be based on the Chinese story of a young girl who runs away with a young man, only for both of them to be killed by the man who the young girl was betrothed to through an arranged marriage. The doves represent the souls of the two young lovers. The "Blue Willow" pattern has been popular since the 18th century.
