BUFFALO POTTERY BLUE WILLOW CERAMIC TABLE ARTICLES, LOT OF 62, comprising eight 9 3/8" D plates, eight 10 1/8" D plates; eight cup and saucer sets; three rectangular vegetable dishes from 6 1/4" x 5" to 9 1/2" x 7 5/8"; three serving bowls from 7 5/8" D to 9 3/8" D; eight 4 7/8" D bowls; eight 6 1/4" D plates; and eight 8 3/8" D plates; all having a blue chinoiserie transfer design in the "Blue Willow" pattern. All marked "SEMI-VITREOUS / BUFFALO POTTERY" with date marks ranging from 1911-1916. Buffalo, New York. 1911-1916.
55 pieces undamaged, otherwise scattered hairlines and small flakes, and one 6 1/4" D plate with areas of glaze exfoliation. Expected glaze crazing and some staining.
Provenance: From the collection of the late Phillip M. Sullivan.
Catalogue Note: The "Blue Willow" pattern is said to be based on the Chinese story of a young girl who runs away with a young man, only for both of them to be killed by the man who the young girl was betrothed to through an arranged marriage. The doves represent the souls of the two young lovers. The "Blue Willow" pattern has been popular since the 18th century.
