BUFFALO POTTERY BLUE WILLOW CERAMIC ARTICLES, LOT OF 41, comprising three 8 3/8" D plates; nine cup and saucer sets with three of the cups being approximately 3 1/8" H with raised feet; two cups; four demitasse cups and one demitasse saucer; two 5 3/4" D dishes; two 5 1/4" D plates; two 9 5/8" D soup plates; two 7 3/8" D plate; and five 9 1/8" D plate; all having a blue chinoiserie transfer design in the "Blue Willow" pattern. All marked "SEMI-VITREOUS / BUFFALO POTTERY" with date marks ranging from 1909-1916. Buffalo, New York. 1909-1916.
30 pieces undamaged, four low cups with flakes and hairlines, one saucer with minute flake on underside of rim, and one saucer with chip on rim. Some expected glaze crazing and staining.
Provenance: From the collection of the late Phillip M. Sullivan.
Catalogue Note: The "Blue Willow" pattern is said to be based on the Chinese story of a young girl who runs away with a young man, only for both of them to be killed by the man who the young girl was betrothed to through an arranged marriage. The doves represent the souls of the two young lovers. The "Blue Willow" pattern has been popular since the 18th century.
