Octavo issue of the second edition of Anson's famous account chronicling adventure and discovery as Anson roamed the Pacific in pursuit of Spanish treasure. Hill comments that "This compilation has long occupied a distinguished position as a masterpiece of descriptive travel. Anson's voyage appears to have been the most popular book of maritime adventure of the eighteenth century." Cox notes that four editions came out the first year of publication, with 16 by 1781. The "Advertisement" at the front of the book notes that this reduced octavo issue contains only the three maps and not the numerous plates of the quarto edition. With folding frontispiece chart of the world, with California depicted as an island; chart of the southern portion of South America; and one of a portion of the Pacific. Cox Vol. I, p.49 (1st Ed.); Hill Pacific Voyages (2nd ed) 1818. On the front flyleaf an early owner has written: "Lord Anson's Voyage in an authentic book, the information being supplied by his Lordship; but it is not genuine, for the rear author was Benj. Robins, & not Walters whose name it bears." Robins' name has also been penned on the title page in the same hand.
