Description
A Springfield military rifle Model 1870, breech loading .50 caliber rifle, replaced the .58 caliber muzzle loader of the Civil War by utilizing the stock and lock of the earlier original weapon by retrofitting with a new breech mechanism. Lock plate marked "Springfield 1864" and most likely was used during the Civil War. Standard marking at breech "Model 1870" over a small eaglehead and crossed arrows. Correct ramrod., associated period bayonet with a later leather and copper-tipped sheath (4 pcs.)
NOTE: The Model 1870 'trapdoor' Springfield rifle was used by the U. S. Army throughout the western Plains Wars of the 1870's-80's. The caliber was changed in the subsequent model, making the Model 1870 relatively scarce with the Springfield Armory manufacturing 11, 543. (RFUN1000/4) {TC}
