Description
Indus River Valley, Mehrgarh, ca. 2600 to 2500 BCE. Buff clay human figurines of Mehrgarh are the oldest clay figurines that have been found in South Asia. While earlier examples were relatively simple, later examples like this demonstrate markedly greater sophistication and show more elaborate hairstyles, jewelry, and prominent breasts indicative of fertility. Although her arms are missing, she probably once held a baby, hence the term "mother goddess." Intended for an elite individual, a fine example. Custom stand. Size: 4.75" H (12.1 cm); 5" H (12.7 cm) on stand.
