Description
Capriccio Landscape of a Temple Ruin with Statue of Athena, rustics with livestock at base on river's edge, sepia ink pen with grey brush washes, on laid paper, early 18th c. In water gilt beaded panel frame, french-lined mat, glazed. OS: 20" x 25- 1/2", SS; 10" x 14". Some stains, tipped to mount. Not examined out of frame.
PROVENANCE: Collector's stamp "E.C." lower left. Label verso reads "Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute Temp. Regs. No. 228/74" (loaned to Williams College, Williamstown, Mass.). From the collection of Professor Julius S. Held, (1905–2002) an art historian, collector, and expert on Dutch painters Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and Rembrandt. He published several monographs and was a professor of art history at Barnard College, Columbia University, from 1937-1970.
