Description
'Battle of Wilson Creek, Fall of General Lyon', watercolor and ink on paper, titled in pencil verso, possibly part of a narrative scroll. In a modern frame and mat, under glass, OS: 23" x 33", SS: 17" x 27", light rippling, soiling. Gen. Nathaniel Lyon of Ashford, Connecticut died in this battle in Missouri on August 10, 1861, very early in the war. Union forces were defeated by a combined force of the Missouri Militia and Confederate troops under the command of Benjamin McCulloch and Sterling Price near Springfield, Missouri. Lyon was killed while trying to rally his outnumbered soldiers. However, LyonÂ’s efforts prevented the State of Missouri from joining the Confederacy. Ladd, known as "The Utica Master", was popular for his continuous panoramas, a series of self-contained episodes in a historical event, displayed of an evening in a parlor, by admission.
