Few facts are known concerning the outstanding and highly versatile lacquer artist Imaizumi Nariyuki but it is thought, judging from the style of his works, that he was active from about 1910 to about 1950; the Irving Gould collection included a suzuribako with a view of Matsushima contained in a storage box signed by Nariyuki and stating that it had been viewed by the Showa Emperor on a documented visit to Ibaragi Prefecture in November 1946
