Description

circa 1730, centered with arms of Bisse of Somerset and Durham, above the motto "Sis Faelix Bis", crest having left three scallops on black ground impaling right those of Bill of Clymsland in Cornwall, three griffins' heads on cobalt ground, surmounted with crest of two interlaced serpents, double spearhead border, rim with alternating cartouches of floral sprays and butterflies, gilt highlights throughout, 11 in.

Note: "Of this family was Philip Bisse, Bishop of St. David's in 1710 and Hereford from 1713 to 1721. Bishop Bisse married in 1705, as her second husband, Bridget Osborne, daughter of the 1st Duke of Leeds. Her first husband was Charles FitzCharles, Earl of Plymouth, son of King Charles II by Catherine Pegge. (It was from the Irish branch of the family that Dr. Bisse, founder of the library of Wadham College Oxford and his son, Dr. Bisse, author of Beauties of Holiness sprang.) In the Franks collection of bookplates there are a number for Robert Biss of Deptford, and Stephen Bisse was a director of the East India Company between 1732 and 1741."
