Description
Slightly curved steel blade with single fuller. Brass hilt with flattened ball pommel engraved with lines. Knucklebow engraved with two deep flutes on each side. Spade shaped quillon has been replaced. Wood grip originally had brass wire wrap, now absent. Attributed to Robert Payne of North Carolina. A nearly identical Council of Safety sword can be seen on page 568 in figure 526 of "American Silver-Hilted Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords by Daniel Hartzler". Copy of "American Silver-Hilted Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords by Daniel Hartzler", featuring this sword will be included. Sword is featured on page 568 figure 527. Very good condition, blade retains a grey patina with light pitting overall. Hilt retains a dark patina with some lighter areas, pommel with scattered dents and marks. Quillon has been professionally replaced. Blade Length-26 - 1/2"; Overall Length-32 - 1/4";
