Moche Corn Popper / Canchero Polychrome Vessel
Moche Corn Popper / Canchero Polychrome Vessel
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 300 to 500 CE. A very fine and attractive canchero vessel (also known as a corn popper) in a beautiful polychrome finish of brick-red and black on beige ground, of a large water dipper in saucer form with a small circular opening and a long figural handle with the head of a warrior modeled in relief. On the reverse, the artist painted two sinuous, slithering serpents with profile heads that feature large eyes and open mouths with intimidatingly sharp, jagged teeth with attractive stylized linear motifs below and striations on the handle. A wonderful example from this ancient Andean culture! Size: 11.5" L x 7" W (29.2 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex-California Museum of Ancient Art
