In the early part of the last century, Pierce-Arrow was one of the most recognized and respected names in the automobile industry. The brand was synonymous with luxury and opulence to the point of being a status symbol among the elite of society. Pierce-Arrow was the preferred choice of Hollywood movie stars, sports celebrities, tycoons, and royalty alike. Academy Award winning actor Sessue Hayakawa famously drove a custom-ordered gold-plated Pierce-Arrow as a statement to the car_s prestige. Moreover, in 1909 two Pierce-Arrows were ordered by President Howard Taft, who was the first president to use an automobile for official state occasions. This tradition would continue all the way through 1935 and the President Franklin D. Roosevelt administration, when the last Pierce-Arrows, 1935 models, were ordered by the White House solidifying Pierce-Arrow_s reputation as the premier automobile manufacturer of its day.
For its time, the Pierce-Arrow featured a high degree of technological sophistication. The company pioneered the use of aluminum, hydraulic tappets, and power brakes, and its engine was a marvel of engineering in its day with its unique multi-valve configuration. Of course, the most enduring styling hallmark of Pierce-Arrows was the placement of the headlamps. Beginning in 1914, the headlights were incorporated into the front fenders in flared housings. Later patented by Pierce-Arrow, this was a novel change from the traditional placement on the sides of the radiator, and this styling feature would continue through the end of production.
Introduced in 1921, the Series 33 was the flagship for Pierce-Arrow throughout most of the Roaring Twenties, and a single 138-inch chassis was offered with ten different body styles available from the factory. Aluminum bodies were fitted over northern white ash frames along with steel fenders and hoods, and under the hood was the legendary Dual-Valve Six, a 414 cubic-inch, six-cylinder, T-head engine using four valves and two spark plugs per cylinder. The two camshafts were located in the aluminum crankcase and were gear-driven off the crankshaft, while the Delco dual-ignition system used two coils mounted on the firewall and a single dual-distributor unit with two distributor caps to fire the spark plugs.
Offered from a long-term private collection, this stately car is a superior example of the top of the line Pierce-Arrow for 1923, and it features a formal seven-passenger limousine body. The outstanding restoration on this car was performed by noted Pierce-Arrow restorer and collector, Ron Blissit of Norman, Oklahoma. The attention to detail on this restoration is amazing and includes German Silver inlay in door panels and rang up bills topping $150,000 in the 1990s. It was done to period-correct standards and with the highest quality throughout finished in an elegant shade of maroon with a contrasting gray interior. Mr. Blissit_s restorations are well-known in the hobby and his work is no stranger to Pebble Beach and the other top Concours events around the country. This fabulous and correct restoration features wooden artillery wheels with whitewall tires and dual side mounts and, in 2005, the car was judged Best in Class by the Pierce-Arrow Society. Later, the car was sent back to Mr. Blissit to be freshened and fully sorted. Lovingly preserved, this magnificent automobile is ready to be shown, enjoyed and admired.
