The Porsche 356 Speedsters built from 1954-1957 were built to be the bare-bones, high performance variant of the 356, and have since evolved to become a highly sought after collector car, and almost unobtainable for many enthusiasts. Porsche is one of the few marques that can claim that their most sparsely-equipped vehicle has become one of their most desirable models ever.
Porsche President Peter Schultz saw the opportunity to recreate a little of the Speedster magic with the air-cooled 911, and utilizing the narrow-bodied 911SC Cabriolet as a starting point, causing quite a sensation at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1987 when the prototype was introduced. Just 2,065 were produced, all in 1989, with just 823 exported to the U.S. Although the original plan for the Speedster was that it would be a fair-weather, low volume, less expensive car for the American market, the price point shifted and option M503 was more expensive ($65,480 versus $59,200) than the Carrera Cabriolet it was based on.
This beautiful California example has been pampered since new, and features the desirable body shell of the 911/930 Turbo, with its aggressively flared front and rear fenders, front and rear spoilers, upgraded suspension, heavy-duty four-piston disc brakes with cross-drilled rotors, and seven-inch front and nine-inch rear wheels. It also features the unique aluminum framed windshield that is more than three inches lower and raked five degrees flatter than that of the Cabriolet. One-piece wind-up side windows, lacking the Cabriolet's fixed quarter panes, curve salaciously in concert with the low-slung and spartan convertible top, a simple fabric cover that is far lighter than its Cabriolet sibling. When raised, the roof echoes the sinister and purposeful look of the original 356 Speedster.
It has been meticulously detailed and is freshly serviced, but never altered from new. The Guards Red paint finish is exceptional, the car is clean from top to bottom, and there is little to separate it from factory new. Inside, the leather-covered seats are clean and supple, the carpets like-new, and every aspect has simply been cared for rather than replaced. It features the rare air-conditioning option, the factory Blaupunkt Charleston radio, and every factory document, tool, and even the Porsche tire inflation kit supplied when new. Even the unique removable hard tonneau that hides the rear storage area is beautiful and, under the bonnet, the engine bay is nothing short of impeccable. Of course, the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity is supplied with your purchase, and the amazing 911 handling is evident as soon as you find a twisty country road and hit fifth gear.
This unmolested and highly original Speedster has just 8,872 miles from new. The Speedster is historic as the final model to have been produced at Porsche_s Stuttgart factory, and its performance, the Speedster_s true raison d_ˆtre, remains strong, clocking 0-60 acceleration times of 5.5 seconds with a 149-mph top speed.
The 3.2-litre Carrera-based Speedster available today is considered among the best-sorted, best built, most durable air-cooled 911s ever made, and commands far more respect than any other Porsche from the era. Ideal for the collector who demands high quality coupled with high performance, it is one of the most desirable 911 variants built.
