Condition
By 1970, the GTO in base form had grown into a rather civilized muscle car. But there was still plenty of fire in the beast, if you knew how to get it. Pontiac had pioneered cold-air induction systems and coined the now famous phrase, "Ram-Air." Several versions could be ordered for the 400 cubic-inch V-8 in the GTO, but it was the Ram Air IV that produced the highest factory supplied horsepower rating ever for the GTO. The idea of using cold-air induction had been experimented with first on Chevrolet_s Z11 set-up in 1963, and proved quite effective before corporate demands shut down the program. However, in 1965 an over-the-counter Ram-Air system was offered by Pontiac, which caught the attention of the competition who soon had their own versions. Pontiac continued developing new versions leading to an unique four-way air induction system and created the fabled Ram-Air IV. Introduced in very limited numbers for 1969, many knew of this advertised 370 horsepower option which was available in any GTO, even the "Judge." For 1970, GTO received a minor facelift, and a few tweaks to their performance package including Ram-Air IV. Even with the introduction of the big-block 455 for the 1970 model year, the small-block V-8 with this with Ram-Air IV was still the hottest selection available. For 1970, GTO retained the long hood/short deck styling theme which it shared with the Tempest/Le Mans intermediate family. Up front the GTO_s exclusive Endura flexible nose piece was restyled to flow more cleanly with the refined front end sheet metal. Simulated wood appliques were now used for the console and dashboard fascia, while the bucket seats were fitted with a breathable weave pattern of durable vinyl.
There are occasionally several Pontiac GTOs on the market at any given time, but rarely is there a gem of the quality and provenance of this beautiful Pepper Green example from 1970. Born from the Pontiac, Michigan assembly plant with the Ram-Air IV induction system, as verified through PHS documentation, this special-order GTO_s original owner didn_t waste money on gingerbread accessories; it was ordered to do one thing - perform as a muscle car should. Behind the engine was the M-21 four-speed transmission connecting to the rear wheels through a set of 4.33:1 gears. It did what a performance vehicle should do, it was taken out and played with. This amazing GTO was treated to a total restoration completed just a couple of years ago. With flawless panel fit and show quality paint in its original color, everything was done to make this car an award winner wherever it is shown. All window rubbers, weather stripping and, of course, the glass work presents just as it did 47 years ago on the showroom floor. Taken down to the bare body and chassis, nothing was overlooked in the build with NOS parts throughout. During the restoration, a period-correct Ram-Air IV _WW_ coded engine was located and installed. Today, this unit belts out well over 360 horsepower and 400 foot-pounds of torque at the rear wheels. At the 2013 GTO Nationals, it was judged as the Best Concours Restored vehicle and at the 2013 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals it proved to be the Best Pontiac receiving the Concours Gold Award. Since its completion, it has been used very lightly, only test and tune miles, and those necessary to participate in judged contests. An extremely rare opportunity to acquire the ultimate in a performance GTO, this opportunity should not be passed by.
