Description
Papua New Guinea, Upper Sepik Region, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A striking hand-carved wooden representation of the spirit of Gra. Made from a single piece of wood, it shows a face with bulging eyes trapped between three downward curving hooks and three upward curving hooks. The wood surface is dark from age, with clear signs of use. Size: 8.3" W x 24.3" H (21.1 cm x 61.7 cm)
A carving like this is used during male initiation ceremonies; the spirit of Gra is held between the hooks that extend from top and bottom.
Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
