Description
A Papua New Guinea Yipwon cult hook from Amboin Village, Karawari River, East Sepik Province. Carved wooden figure standing in profile with dark painted finish, featuring a face above carved concentric hooks on an angled leg. Used as an ancestral representation to be consulted before war and hunting. Some wear to finish, glued repairs and large chip at foot. 59 1/2" high. ESTIMATE $300-400 PROVENANCE: From the Solomon collection in Wolverine Lake, Michigan. Purchased in Amboin Village in 1980.
