Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A standing pregnant woman in the classic Jalisco stylized form, with a long, aquiline nose, high, wide breasts, and short arms and legs. Cream details give her a belt and necklace, while applied pottery gives her a headdress and bracelets. Size: 5.7" W x 8.3" H (14.5 cm x 21.1 cm)

This figure would have been placed into a shaft tomb; small figurines that faced outward around the perimeter of graves inside of shaft tombs are a hallmark of the elusive early West Mexican cultures in Jalisco and neighboring Nayarit and Colima.

Provenance: Ex-Private LA County collection acquired in the 1980's
