Description
Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Tlatilco, ca. 800 BCE. A fantastic ceramic standing woman with hands clasped in front of her stomach. Her legs are long and her body slender; her coiffure and face are finely detailed, with hair pushed behind large spool earrings and well-rendered wide eyes and mouth. Red pigment in stripes around her arms, waist, and legs gives the impression of tattooing or clothing. Size: 2.7" W x 7.4" H (6.9 cm x 18.8 cm)
Tlatilco artisans are known for their unique figurines, in dynamic, lifelike poses, found in great quantities in their tombs. This culture was contemporary with the Olmec, but the artistic style is typically completely different (though at times the Olmec did influence the Tlatilco), and is also not replicated by cultures that came after them.
Provenance: Ex-Harvey Collection, acquired prior to 1972
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
