Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Valdivian culture, ca. 3500 to 1500 BCE. A hand-built pottery idol figure, with a feminine form, it is believed that the figures were used in fertility rituals. Her arms are crossed below her breasts, and the head is almost entirely covered with a helmet-like coiffure or headdress, the chin and mouth just visible below. Enveloped in red slip, the piece's surface has been burnished to a lustrous sheen. The Valdivian culture created the oldest known pottery figurines in the Americas! The obscured face is a style from the earlier time frame, around 3000 BCE. Size: 1.5" W x 3.75" H (3.8 cm x 9.5 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
