At the beginning of the letter, Chagall apologizes for his delay in replying to Talphir: "I am the 'unorganized' or the most informal person alive, even in art".
After discussing various artistic matters related to Talphir and to him, Chagall asks: "give the land you are standing on a kiss. I am sure the country will once appreciate your art". And he adds, "we might visit Israel on its tenth [anniversary]".
Chagall visited Israel several times. His first visit was in 1931 with his wife Bella. On his last visit, in 1977, he received the "Yakir Yerushalayim" (worthy citizen of Jerusalem) prize.
Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was considered the world's preeminent Jewish artist. His paintings are characterized by a world of fantasy and dream. He painted many paintings of the Shtetl of Eastern Europe as well as scenes from the bible. Most of his works of art are exhibited in museums in the USA, Russia, Switzerland and Holland and only a few of them are exhibited in Israel.
