Ben Gurion sent the letter is response to an invitation to a memorial ceremony for Marcus. Ben Gurion explains that unfortunately, due to his health, he will be unable to participate. Then he writes touching and interesting things about Marcus.

"I shall never forget the bitter new I had received on the morning of 11.6.48 by major-Genral Yigal Alon that 'our friend Commander Stone [Marcus] has been killed…' this was the worst disaster the IDF had known those days. Those days, Major-General Marcus was the excellent, distinguished and most talented commander to assist the young state. Actually, he was appointed the high commander of the IDF and the complete army trusted him and anyone he came in touch with admired him…" Ben Gurion continues to praise Marcus and ends: "he was a trustworthy, whole-heartedly devoted Jew".

David Daniel "Mickey" Marcus (1901–1948) was a United States Army colonel who assisted Israel during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and who became Israel's first modern general. He was killed by friendly fire, when he was mistaken for an enemy infiltrator while returning to Israeli positions at night.
Marcus is one of the well-known Israeli Machal soldiers.
Marcus' grave is the only one in the West Point Cemetery at the United States Military Academy for an American killed fighting under the flag of another country; he was still eligible for interment there because he was a graduate of the academy who served honorably. His gravestone at West Point reads: "Colonel David Marcus—a Soldier for All Humanity".
