Description
Passover Haggadah "according to the Ashkenazi and Sephardic customs". With three commentaries by three most prominent rabbis: Rabbi Moshe Alsheich, "Gevurot Hashem" by the Maharal of Prague, "Olelot Efrayim" by Rabbi Shlomo Efrayim Luntschitz (author of the "Kli Yakar"). In addition, the Abravanel commentary on the Piyut "Az Riv Nissim Ve'Ometz Gevurotecha" and the "Mateh Aharon" commentary of "Chad Gadya". With the laws of Bedikat Chametz, Ta'anit Bechorot, the baking of the Matzah, Ha'g'alat Kelim, the Passover Seder and more.
Amsterdam, 1781. The printing press of the widow and orphans of the late Ya'akov Proops Katz.
Two title pages. Half-title page with a copperplate illustration and a nice frame with an illustration of the two square Stone Tablets with the inscription "Beit Yisrael Beit Chorin". At the bottom of the title page, an illustration of the hands of the Kohanim - the emblem of the Katz family, among the most important printers of Poland.
An interesting aspect of the Haggadah is the fact that it is meant for both Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jews. The Haggadah contains Ashkenazic and Sephardic Piyutim, two versions of Birkat Ha'Mazon and the like. Moreover, the editor of the Haggadah assumes that Hebrew is not the everyday language of its readers. Therefore, throughout the Haggadah, there are instructions in two languages, one beside the other: Yiddish and Ladino. This multiplicity is typical of Amsterdam, where the Haggadah was printed, since the two communities, Sephardic and Ashkenazic, lived one beside the other.
The Haggadah contains large, impressive copperplate illustrations according to the 1795 Amsterdam editio. With a large, folded map of the Land of Israel at the end of the Haggadah. The map includes the journeys of the Israelites in the desert and the division of the country to the tribes.
