Saul Raskin (1878-1966) was an illustrator, painter, printmaker, and critic. Born in Nogaisk, Russia, Raskin studied lithography in Odessa, and attended art academies in Germany, Switzerland, France, and Italy. In 1904 immigrated to the US. He worked in many media and had a reputation for his attention to detail and realistic approach. His imagery depicted scenes of Jewish life, especially that of New York's Lower East Side. Trips to Palestine yielded many representations of country's Jews, among them twenty lithographs of Jerusalem. Raskin also illustrated Hebrew texts, including Pirke Aboth, Haggadah, Psalms, Siddur, Kabbalah in Word & Image, Hebrew Rhapsody. The art and theater critic for the Yiddish magazine Das Neie Land, Ruskin in 1911 article ""The Future of Jewish Art"" bemoans the inability to find common Jewish attributes in the works of such artists as Antokolsky, Israels, Liebermann, Pissarro. Raskin postulated that a Jewish Art might emerge through the identification of common themes & subjects in the work of contemporaries, rather than through an examination of the techniques, forms, & styles used by artists of Jewish heritage. Raskin's work exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy. His work collected by many major museums and galleries, including the Brooklyn Museum.
