A carved grey schist high relief panel depicting the head of a regal male, perhaps a prince, with an expressive visage comprised of naturalistic features, flowing wavy locks of hair kept in place with a narrow headband, and a bare muscular chest. Alexander the Great conquered Gandhara in 330 BCE and with the help of the Indo-Greek kings introduced classical traditions that would influence Gandharan art for the following seven centuries. The stylized curly Mediterranean hair as well as sensitive modeling of the figure's face and attention to human anatomy exhibits this classical influence. A rare example of Greco-Buddhist art that demonstrates a strong syncretism between eastern and western traditions. Custom block stand.
