Description
Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st century CE. A beautiful seated depiction of Buddha, hand-carved from grey schist in high relief. Buddha sits with his hands in the Dhyana mudra, a gesture of meditation, with the hands placed in the lap, right hand on left. His slender body is clothed in carefully sculpted, flowing robes, and his hair is presented in a traditional top knot known as an ushnisha. Size: 2.45" W x 3.7" H (6.2 cm x 9.4 cm); 4.65" H (11.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Piece is a fragment with light encrustation in the lower profile areas. A few small chips and nicks from surface commensurate with age. Nice remaining detail.
