Description
This finely-carved earth spirit, featuring body of standing lion with scrollwork at haunches and belly, a stylistic human face, and rabbit ears. This example of funerary retinue is most likely from the Tang Dynasties (589-618 or 618–907 ce). The large sculpture is approximately 5-1/8 inches high, 2-1/2 inches wide, and 5 inches long. Jade was used as early as the fifth millennium BCE for making personal ornaments and small figurative sculptures. Although we do not know the exact meaning of motifs, the context of similar finds suggests that these anthropomorphic creatures were part of the religious or shamanic system.
Condition
The sculpture is sound with no noted defects. The nephrite exhibits surface alteration from age and patina from professional restoration. From a private collection, this artifact is clean, however will be sold without further restoration (as is).
