Item Details
Description
the set of 4 plates after David Allan, comprising The Opening of the Carnival at Rome, The Romans Polite to Strangers, The Horse Race at Rome During the Carnival, and The Victor Conducted in Triumph, aquatints printed in bistre, each c.380 x 560mm., mounted on early canvas supports, some browning and occasional slight dampstaining, under old glass in uniform antique ebonised frames, [not in Abbey], [1780] (4) David Allan (1744-1796) moved to Rome in 1767, for a highly successful and fruitful 10-year visit. Based on a series of bistre wash studies made in 1775, Allan wrote to Sir William Hamilton that Paul Sandby purchased a group of 8 of them, in 1780. Although normally accompanied by a letterpress sheet of descriptive text, absent here, only a set of 4 published plates is known.
