Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A blackware jar with a cylindrical spout rising from its back and a flattened strap handle curving from mid-spout to the back. The body of the vessel has a stippled texture and, rising from one end, the head of an animal with a wrinkled face. Legs and a tail in low relief on the shoulder of the jar complete the animal's body. The face is mammalian, but beyond that it is unclear what kind of animal this is. This type of mold made vessel would have been placed into one of the graves at Chan Chan, the Chimu capital, probably holding chicha or some other sacred libation. Size: 7" L x 4.8" W x 7.2" H (17.8 cm x 12.2 cm x 18.3 cm)
