Description
Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1370 CE. A blackware stirrup jar featuring Naylamp (Naymlap or Ñañlap), a powerful god in pre-Columbian Peru. This vessel features him flanked by warriors on its shoulder, his face, familiar to lovers of Peruvian art, intensely decorated and instantly recognizable. The spout emerges from his head. A small animal - a monkey? A cat? - perches with a Cheshire Cat grin atop the strap handle. Size: 6.45" W x 7.5" H (16.4 cm x 19 cm)
