Exceptional Johnston Brookes and Company Bronze and Cut Glass Two-Light Argand Lamp, second quarter 19th century, London, richly cut with strawberry diamond-point lotus leaves, the urn-form font set with a bronze prism ring terminating in dolphin's heads, hung with exceptional prisms, with additional prisms around the base, forming a cut glass ring, the bronze arms set into a plume-decorated socket, with pierced scrollwork decorating each side, one arm labeled "Johnston Brookes & Co., Manufacturer, London", set with period-appropriate cut and frosted glass shades, h. 25", w. 17-1/2", d. 6-1/2". Provenance: Rosedown, Saint Francisville, Louisiana.
Condition
Part of the cut glass standard (above the circular foot) has been professionally repaired with three visible staples. There are two small chips - one to the foot rim, the other to the edge of the standard where it meets the bronze arm. The prism tips, edges and shade fitter rims exhibit scattered "fleabite" chips as are to be expected with use. Shades and chimneys are of a later period. Lamp is electrified. In overall good condition.
