Description
REVOLUTIONARY WAR "FORT DEFIANCE" POWDER HORN
Important Revolutionary War-era hand-carved powder horn, elaborately decorated, about 11” long. The horn bears various distinct engraveds, including the identification: “Arthur Good / His Horn / 1780”, with the “N” inverted. Also, “Fort Royal” and a heraldic eagle with a banner with the word “LIBERTY” in its beak. There also appear two sailing vessels and other images including a view of Fort Defiance, an man [Indian?] with a tomahawk, a house with shade tree, and so on. The small end tip plug is gone, and the and there is an old 1 1/2" fracture near the large end. Overall very good. Fort Defiance was located on Red Hook Point in Brooklyn. In 1776 Americans there held back the British man-o-war Roebuck, and prevented the fleet's advance up the East River. Had they succeeded the American army would have been completely surrounded, and could not have successfully withdrawn from Red Hook/Fulton Ferry to Manhattan.
