Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mixtec / Aztec, ca. 1250 to 1521 CE. A very rare and large ceremonial green stone mace head depicting the head of a dog with meticulously pecked big round eyes, a protruding snout presenting a rounded nose in high relief and a skillfully rendered openwork mouth with gnashing teeth, perky round ears also with nice pecking marks, and a finely delineated jawline. Given its exquisite artistry, large size, and good condition, this mace head was probably not used for actual combat but rather reserved for ritualistic purposes. In the Pre-Columbian world, dogs were beloved as loyal companions, just as they are today. They were kept as pets, guardians, used to assist with hunting, and unfortunately, fattened up to be eaten. Of the four domesticated animals in Mesoamerica (the others being the turkey, the Muscovy duck, and the bee), the dog was regarded as the most important. A person was guaranteed success, friends, and precious material possessions under the Aztec sign of the Dog. A very rare and impressive piece, replete with strong technique, elegant lines, and symbolic iconography. Size: 5.5" L x 4.25" W x 3.375" H (14 cm x 10.8 cm x 8.6 cm)
