Item Details
Description
Superb Quality Silver Grip Civil War German-Made Presentation Sword. 35-inch curved blade marked on the reverse ricasso "W. CLAUBERG / [Standing Knight logo] / SOLINGEN", and the retailer name "SCHUYLER, HARTLEY / & GRAHAM / NEWARK" on the obverse ricasso. The blade's obverse exhibits a spread-wing eagle with shield on breast and riband above, surrounded by rays and flanked by scroll work; the reverse side features a very elaborate large "US" flanked by scrollwork. Gilded-hilt with the heavy basket pierced with scrollwork and leaves, with additional scrollwork and leaves on the quillon, and where the knucklebow enters the pommel. The heavy pommel cap features cast scrollwork around the edges. The silver grip with plain panels alternating with those cast with deep scalloped decoration. German-silver scabbard with brass throat, mounts and drag. The obverse side of the mounts bear detailed figural decoration; the upper mount with Columbia holding her shield; the lower featuring a solider motif. The sword is inscribed between the ring mounts: "LIEUT. WOODHULL / Presented by the / COMPANY".

Sadly, there is no direct provenance to determine exactly to which Woodhull the sword was presented, though the Civil War database includes a few potential candidates. For example, Lt. Aaron Woodhull of the 1st Maryland Cavalry, and Addis E. Woodhull, New York 96th Infantry among others.

Condition: Excellent. Retaining approximately 70% original gilt on the hilt. Bright blade with some light spotting from scabbard storage. A few light, shallow dents to the scabbard. Brass mounts with a uniform patina.
