THE BEST CRITICAL EDITION OF POINSOT'S THEOLOGICAL WRITINGS

The «Solesmes» edition of the Cursus Theologicus by John Poinsot, considered by some scholars the best critical edition of these texts.

João Poinsot (1589–1644), better known as John of St. Thomas or Johannes Poinsot (since 1980s in American texts also John Poinsot) was a Portuguese theologian and philosopher, born at Lisbon. His theological and philosophical writings, which have gone through many editions, are among the best expositions of St. Thomas’s doctrine, of which he is acknowledged to be one of the foremost interpreters. Though he took an active part in the scholastic discussions of his times, his courtesy was such that he is said never to have hurt an opponent’s feelings. So faithful was he to the traditions of his order and the principles of the Angelic Doctor that in his last illness he could declare that, in all the thirty years he had devoted to teaching and writing, he had not taught or written anything contrary to St. Thomas.

The ancient edition were considered by the scholars very poor. Per tale ragione alcuni monaci di Solesmes e la casa editrice Desclee intrapresero, sotto la direzione di Edmond Boissard OSB, la coraggiosa e impegnativa impresa di realizzare un’edizione critica di quest’opera. Purtroppo, come già è stato detto, solo metà del Cursus theologicus è stato edito, complice la morte di Boissard, e i monaci di Solesmes non intendono proseguire in tale sforzo. Per ciò che concerne l’analisi catalografica e bibliografica del lavoro in esame, poste le medesime norme valide per l’edizione parigina, segnalo l’esemplare Bologna, Istituto per le scienze religiose, XVII-33/1-(1-5). Si noti che questa edizione, tutt’ora reperibile presso Les editions de Solesmes, presenta la particolarità di essere stata edita non solo un tomo alla volta, ma addirittura per gruppi di fascicoli. A causa di ciò può accadere che i volumi di questa edizione posseduti da alcune biblioteche non siano completi. I, typis Societatis S. Contiene, oltre alla prefazione dei monaci di Solesmes e agli importanti documenti da essi rinvenuti, i tre trattati “introduttivi” alla teologia già ricordati e le disputationes 1-7 pubblicati nel primo tomo dell’edizione archetipa. Contiene le disputationes 8-20 del primo tomo dell’edizione archetipa e le disputationes 1-2, rinumerate come 21-22, del secondo tomo dell’edizione archetipa. III, typis Societatis S. Joannis evangelistæ Desclee et Sociorum, Parisiis - Tornaci - Romæ 1937. Contiene le disputationes 3-11 del secondo tomo dell’edizione archetipa, rinumerate come 23-31. IV, typis Societatis S. Joannis evangelistæ Desclee et Sociorum, Parisiis - Tornaci - Romæ 1953. Contiene le disputationes 12-25 del terzo tomo dell’edizione archetipa, rinumerate come 32-45, e il trattato De opere sex dierum. V, typis Fratrum Protat, Matiscone 1964. Contiene le disputationes 1-10 del quarto tomo dell’edizione archetipa, il quale però comprendeva anche le disputationes 11-12.
