Complete in 15 volumes. With extra engraved title pages, title vignettes, title pages printed in black and red, most volumes with multiple title pages; numerous engraved portraits, maps, and views, many double-page or fold-out, engraved initials, head and tail devices; printed in double columns. (Folio) 42.5x26.5 cm (16¾x10½"), period vellum, spine labels printed in gilt.



Complete set of the extensive Sicilian history began by Graevii and continued by Pieter Burman. With numerous engraved portraits of historical figures, detailed maps and scenes. Pieter Burman was appointed professor of history for the United Provinces and in 1724 he became the 9th Librarian of Leiden University. His numerous editorial and critical works spread his fame as a scholar throughout Europe. Very scarce, with no auction records located.

Condition
Varying degrees of wear and soiling to vellum, some volumes with vellum tearing, slitting, and starting to pull from boards, library numbers/labels to spine heels, varying degrees of chipping to spine labels, one worn nearly completely away; occasional library stamp to title page or front pastedown, some pastedowns partially detached from boards, varying degrees of toning to text blocks, scattered spotting and foxing; interiors generally sound and apparently complete (though have not been collated), plates, maps etc., in very good condition with occasional toning or bit of foxing, irregular fold, etc.
