Description
VERY SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF THIS RICHLY ILLUSTRATED ACCOUNT ON THE EXCAVATIONS MADE BY JUDICA OF THE EXTINCT CITY OF AKRAI (ACRE) IN SICILY

Judica, Gabriele. Le antichità di Acre scoperte, descritte ed illustrate dal barone Gabriele Judica […]. Messina: presso Giuseppe Pappalardo, 1819.

Folio, 410x290 mm, XX cent. half morocco leather binding with corners, marbled paper at boards; pp. [4], V, [5 b.], [2], 167, [1], X, [2 b.], XXXIV plates.
Title-page and plates drawn in monochrome aquamarine, engraved on copper by Giuseppe Politi from Syracuse. Portrait of the author within an oval at frontispiece, engraved on copper by Giuseppe Politi from Syracuse and designed by Bartolo Ferro from Catania.
The beautiful plates show medals, friezes, metopes, statues, bronzes and vases found during the excavations that Baron Judica, keeper of the Royal Authority of the District of Noto, made near the present town of Palazzolo Acreide, where once stood the city of Acre (Akrai).
The dating of the book seems to be moved to 1821, despite the title is bearing the date 1819, since the dedication to the Duke of Calabria and a letter appreciative of Francesco di Paola Avolio are both dated 1820, and the portrait at frontispiece is engraved in 1821.
