Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Atlantic Watershed, ca. 500 to 900 CE. A sweet and meaningful frog effigy sculpture hand-carved and pecked from a single piece of native volcanic stone, replete with a lovely form, nice detailing of the legs and face, and layers of symbolism. In the Pre-Columbian world frogs were associated with rain, all the sustenance it ensures, and by extension fertility. Their croaking sound was believed to herald rainstorms. In essence, frogs were thought to be powerful rainmakers. Their connotations with fertility stem from the fact that frogs lay thousands of eggs and typically assume a squatting position, as we see here, akin to a woman in childbirth. A wondeful example. Size: 6.25" L x 3.25" W x 3.125" H (15.9 cm x 8.3 cm x 7.9 cm)
