Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Guanacaste, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A finely handbuilt redware tripod vessel of an endearing avian form with applied wings and tail. Note how the birdy's head, cocked to the side rather than facing forward, communicates a lively expression. Beyond its lovely form are the incised intricate surface decorations with four rectangular panels that contain stylized geometrics on the body, striations embellishing the wings, tail, crest, cheeks, and applied 'collar' surrounding the bird's neck which is further decorated with five circular bead-like forms. A precious form replete with copious detail! Size: 5-1/4" x 4-1/2" x 3-1/8" (13.3 x 11.4 x 7.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Olan collection, California, by family descent, acquired 1960 to 1970.
